Citrus point guard Leo Ricketts and City College of San Francisco forward Kenyon DeMuynck have been named the State Players of the Year in a vote by the California Community Colleges Men's Basketball Coaches Association conference representatives.
Ricketts, a sophomore from De La Salle High School in Concord, averaged 20 points a game for Citrus. He also averaged three rebounds a game and four assists a contest. Through 30 games, Citrus was the lone college to average over 100 points a game. Ricketts and his teammnates are seeded #2 in the 3C2A State Championship tournament this weekend in Visalia.
DeMuynck, who was the Coast-North's co-MPV and Freshman of the Year, after helping the Rams to the conference title and another 30-win season. DeMuynck from Link Academy in San Leandro, averaged 12.3 points and five rebounds per game. He also had 111 blocks through the regional tournament. He has his teammnates will be trying to win the college's seventh men's basketball state title.
Meanwhile, Brett Lauer of Citrus and Perry Webster of Fullerton were selected as the CCCMBCA's Co-Coach of the Year in the south, while Justin Labagh of City College of San Francisco was rewarded in the north. Bauer has his program back in the state tournament after winning the Western State-South title. At 29-1, Citrus led the state in scoring. Meanwhile, Webster led Fullerton to another Orange Empire Conference title. The conference is considered the toughest conference in the state. This year, seven of the eight conference members qualified for the post-season. Fullerton is the south's top seed in the state tournament. Labagh has won more state titles than any coach in the state's history. This year, after winning the state title last year, reloaded and has the Rams seeded #1 in the north and 29-1 headed into the Final Eight.
In all, 24 players were honored with first-team all-state honors, and another 14 players earned honorable mention.
