Three Teams Move into the CCCMBCA Top 30
San Francisco City remains the state's top-ranked team with the release of the season's first Winning Percentage Index Report
San Francisco City, the defending state champions, remains the state's top ranked team as the CCCMBCA transitions to the Winning Index Percentage (WPI) rankings for its Top 30 poll. The Rams, who began the season as No. 1, suffered its first loss of the season on December 18 when No. 10 West Valley scored a 64-56 victory over the Rams. Despite the loss, San Francisco secured a 4.821 score, easily holding off No. 2 Fullerton at 4.467. Santa Rosa, at No. 3, is the only other program to a score in the four's, at 4.000.
Citrus, Mt. San Antonio, Cerritos, Modesto land from No. 4 to No. 7 with scores above 3.000 in the WPI. Cosumnes River comes in at No. 8 yet trails Modesto in their WPI ranking despite scoring a 28-point win over Modesto last week.
The WPI software determines the value of the cumulative wins and losses that each team has against other teams, including out-of-state community colleges (something the NCRPI can't do). Results against junior varsity, club and alumni teams are excluded from earning points and being factored into a college's score.
A win against a team with a winning record earns more value than a win against a team with a losing record. Conversely, a loss to a team with a winning record is less detrimental than a loss to a losing team. At the time of each report, each team's current winning percentage is assigned a number value from among 16 sectors (separated by 6.25 percent increments). The value of a win or loss can change after each game due to potential "sector" changes to their opponent's sector. In other words, teams move up and down depending on each game's outcome, which is why we use the word dynamic to explain the value of a win and or loss.
Here is an example of how the software calculates in wins and losses: A win vs. Sector 8 is 8 points, Sector 7.5 is 7.5, and so forth. A loss vs. Sector 8 is -0.5 point, Sector 7.5 is -1, Sector 7.0 is -1.5, and so forth. A team's cumulative rating points are then divided by the number of games played. Rankings are then sorted by highest to lowest ratings. The WPI also provides a strength of schedule for each conference.
Las Positas, which was shocked by San Jose City last week, is No. 9, while San Jose climbed to No. 19, up eight slots from the last poll. West Valley, which suffered a 72-69 loss to unranked Feather River after stunning San Francisco City in Stockton, rounds out the top 10.
Currently, the Coast-North and the Orange Empire conferences lead their respective regions as far as overall strength.
For the remainder of the season, the WPI will used to determine the CCCMBCA's Top 30. CCCMBCA will release a new poll on January 19, and startiung on February 2 every week through the end of regulation play.
