Defending Champions Squeeze Out Preseason No. 1 Ranking

It is a CCCMBCA tradtion that the defending state champion opens the next season as the preseason favorite. Only twice has the defending champion failed to open the next season No. 1 in the last 26 years.

In 2025-26, it nearly became the third time the defending champions failed to secure the No. 1 spot.

After compiling coaches' voting, San Francisco City ultimately edged Fullerton, Sequoias and West Valley for the state's top spot. Each of those three programs received the majority of number one votes. In all, seven colleges received a number one vote. However, when the dust settled, San Francisco City managed to edged Fullerton by one point and Sequoias and West Valley by two and three points, respectively.

San Francisco City begins its defense of its state championship on Saturday against Butte before meeting #11 Santa Rosa on Sunday. Fullerton squares off against #3 Sequoias on Saturday in Visalia. Meanwhile, West Valley opens against Compton, the south's No. 14-ranked team.
